Montblanc Winter Ascent
Fitness level: C/D Tech. level: 3 (ice) Ski/Snowboard level: 5+ |
At 4810 meters above sea level, the Montblanc is to be found at the top of the list of many mountaineers.
About the activity
Our long ascent is being done the "old way", from the Grd.Mullet hut, the extreme surroundings and the stunning views are an added value to this special, high summit.
More about the activity:
A classic option for fit people after the Chamonix Zermatt alpine traverse- the fact that we can descent sometime from the top itself with ski’s makes it one of the Alps best ski mountaineering summits.
Required fitness level & difficulty:
This activity may suite people that have ski mountaineering experience and alpine skills (including some experience in steep ice and frontal points); we will be climbing about 1800 meters elevation and ski descent in one day; hence this ascent requires a very good level of physical fitness and skiing ability.
Good off piste skiing abilities in variable conditions essential!- Ski & Snowboard, Level 5+.
Very good fitness level, est. 6 hours of climbing 1800 meters on the summit day- Fitness level C+/D.
Max. ratio guiding 1:2, Min. 1:1
Timetable
* The mentioned timetable is exemplary and may vary due to conditions, ability of the participants, safety & weather limitations.
Day 1: arrival to Chamonix and check in at the hotel; meeting Harim-Mountains Guide at 17:00, gear check and pre activity briefing.
Day 2: Together we take the lift to the Plan de l'Aiguille – at 2,317m meters it is the middle station of the Aiguille du Midi cable car. A long traverse under the Cosmique ridge brings us to the Bossons Glacier and the rock island of the Grand Mullet hut (3,050 m) after about 4 hours walk. The Grand Mullet was built first at 1853 to cater the “normal way” up the Montblanc in summer- renovated in 1960- the hut today is being used mainly in the spring for ski mountaineering ascents up the Montblanc.
Day 3: Depending greatly on the current conditions, we will ether head up the north flank of the Dome du Gouter and then via Refuge Vallot to the Montblanc summit, or, through the flatter big & small plateaus. The climb itself is about a 6 hours push and is challenging, both physically and mentally in high altitude and cold temperatures. After 1800 meters we will stand on the top of the highest alpine summit- enjoying the panoramic views of the alpine terrain in 3 different countries.
After a short rest we will walk back down to the Vallot hut and ski down through both Plateaus to the Grand Mullet; where we will pick up our gear and head back to the Midi middle station.
** Prolonging the program to 6 days (3 days at the start with an ice course and acclimatization program and one more night upon return in the Grand Mullet) is possible on request.
